A Victorian diamond ring
Even today, this period of jewellery is highly sought after. Queen victoria’s own life heavily influenced the jewellery during this period and the fashions changed with her own preferences throughout her reign. The people were fond of their queen and followed her every choice. An age of innovation and social development, naturalism remained a favourite theme, though it became stimulated by the romantic movement. Diamond set bouquets of flowers were decorated with cascading diamond drops, imitating rainfall. Contrasting colours, seed pearls and organic materials cut en cabochon were favoured. The ‘snake’ became synonymous with the era and can be seen in the form of necklets, bracelets and rings.

We chose seven talismans (a lucky number), which you can find in antique, vintage and modern interpretations with diamonds, pearls or precious stones. Although some of these motifs have been around since ancient times and in various cultures and civilizations, they were particularly strong during the victorian era, known for its symbolic jewelry.
1837-1901 we have the victorians to thank for some of today’s most popular jewelry motifs, including hearts, serpents, stars and butterflies. These feminine, whimsical themes reflect the prosperity, romanticism and sentimentality that defined the period of queen victoria’s british rule, from 1837 until her death in 1901. From old mine diamonds set in silver collets and backed with gold, to hand-chased gold and enamel jewels, to bold colored gemstones worn in fresh and creative ways, victorian jewelry displays a range of styles and crafting techniques. Personal jewelry was imbued with meaning, and lockets and rings were symbolic mementos to exchange between family, friends, lovers and spouses.

Early victorian jewellery was heavily influenced by romanticism, symbolism and naturalism. Victoria's love of religion, her husband and nature and in particular the scottish landscape, was reflected in many designs of the day. Bracelets made of silver with stones from scotland were popular, as were floral spray brooches, tendrils, leaves and tiny flowers. The serpent necklace and bracelet flourished in this early period to signify eternity, as did crosses for faith, anchors for hope, hearts for charity and a plethora of other motifs. Sentimental jewellery from a loved one's hair or even their teeth remained as popular as in georgian times.
In early victorian britain the deep affection queen victoria and prince albert had for each other influenced many aspects of life and art. Religious and sentimental jewellery was very much in fashion. Hearts, crosses and hands crafted from gold and silver are a feature of this time. The natural world was also represented in the shape of serpent bangles and rings. Rather than representing the snake in adam & eve, victorian serpent jewellery was inspired by the engagement ring prince albert gave to queen victoria. Victorian bracelets adorned with birds, trees and floral motifs are still very popular today.
